Knitting a Cowl

I’ve made a bit of progress on my knit cowl, and I love how it’s shaping up so far! Here’s what it looks like.

I am really enjoying knitting with Boutique Magical Yarn by Red Heart. It’s soft. It’s colorful. It’s fun to knit with. What more can I ask for? The photo below shows you a close-up of the stitches.

Have you joined us in this knit along yet? You can find the pattern in our Winter Issue (it’s called the Simply Magical Cowl and is featured on the cover of the magazine). If you’ve ever wondered how to knit a cowl, this is a great starting point.

I also wanted to mention yarn amounts. I can already tell that I will need more than one skein of yarn to complete this project. I’ve heard from other knitters who’ve experienced the same thing. Because tension is unique to each person, the amount of yarn required for each pattern can vary slightly from person to person. So don’t be shy about picking up an extra skein just in case. You might need it.

And be sure to send us photos of your knit cowl. We’d love to see them too!

If I wanted to cast-on less than the 148 stitches that the pattern called for, would I just cast-on an even number of stitches?

    • Sarah says:

Hi Lynn. Good question. The number of stitches to cast on depends on the repeat of the stitch pattern. Check the pattern and see how many stitches are repeated in the stitch pattern each round and multiply that number to get a cast-on amount that fits the length you are going for. I’d play around with it a little bit. It shouldn’t take long to find something that works. Good luck!

Where should we send pictures? I’ve made a bit of progress on mine this week, and plan to spend a good part of the weekend on it.

This is my second request, I love this cowl so much that I just ordered the book that the pattern was in. Can you please tell me the name of the color used in the yarn in this photo. I know it is Red Heart but want to know the color name. Thank you so much!
