Our Simply Magical Cowl Is Finished!

It’s great to finish a knitting pattern, especially when you’re looking forward to wearing the final result! This cowl was just the kind of project I was in the mood for. I enjoyed the knitting process from beginning to end. It was one of those relaxing patterns that are simple and easy and small enough to finish fairly quickly.

Here’s a photo of me knitting the last few rows.

The photo below shows the cowl when it measured 12 inches from top to bottom. Isn’t the color blend fun? After snapping this photo, I bound off my stitches and wove in the yarn ends.

The cowl may not look very wide when it’s laying on a flat surface, but once it was off the needles, it stretched out nicely, and I could loop it twice around my neck. Warm and snug! Just how I like it.

Next week, we’ll be sharing photos of knit cowls sent to us by our readers. If you’ve had a chance to participate in this knit along, be sure to email us a photo at info@loveofknitting.com. We’d love to share it on the blog.

If you haven’t started this pattern yet, definitely give it a look. There’s still plenty of winter weather left, and this is a cowl you’ll wear again and again. You can find this pattern in our Winter Issue.

Let us know how your cowl shaped up. Did you enjoy this pattern as much as I did?

Love your finished result! I have a bit more than 8 inches in length on mine right now – might be able to finish up this weekend.

And, yes – I am just loving this project! The perfect thing to reward myself after finishing up all my gift stitching (as I started it Christmas afternoon).

I am new to knitting and just started casting on and I am noticing that knitting the bulkier places in the yarn is somewhat slow and difficult…. is this normal and do you have any advice to share about this?

    • Sarah says:

Hi Jennifer! Thanks for your comment. Knitting the bulkier parts of the yarn can be a bit difficult. I’d just take it slow and try to keep your tension from becoming too tight so you can still maneuver the yarn okay. It will get easier as your fingers get used to the yarn. I hope you enjoy the project! Check back and let us know how it goes.

Just finished knitting my Magical Cowl. Loved the yarn and will do several more but next time will make slightly bigger. I believe the pattern repeat is 4 stitches so I will increase. Thanks for your free patterns and keep up the great work.

I am making the NIGHTFALL SCARF in the winter book, page 1. I did the
provisional cast-on row and now I have to combine them with the cast on stitches.
How do I knit these two rows of stitches together? I have them now on 2 needles.
    I am stuck!!!!

Hi Gloria! Good question. So basically, what you’ve done so far is knit 12 inches in pattern for the Nightfall Scarf. Then you fold the knit fabric in half to create a pocket and undo the provisional cast-on row so you have live stitches on both ends of the fabric on two separate needles. By knitting the stitches together, you’ll create one piece that will flow down from there to create the rest of the scarf. To knit the two rows of stitches together, make sure the RS are facing and hold the needles side by side. Insert a needle into the first stitch of the first needle and the first stitch of the second needle. Wrap the yarn around and knit them both together and slip them off the needles. Continue in this manner, knitting the next stitch from one needle and the next stitch from the other needle together until you have knit them all. If you have any more questions, you can email us at info@loveofknitting.com. Enjoy!
