How to Get Out of a Knitting Rut

Could you be stuck in a rut when it comes to your knitting? Here are a few signs that you might be:

  • You’ve knit the same scarf for every member of your family. You are bored with the pattern but can’t bring yourself to decide on another pattern to begin.
  • Your current work in progress hasn’t been touched in months.
  • Your last knitting project didn’t turn out the way you hoped, and now you are reluctant to try something new.

Like anything in life, there are ups and downs, and you may experience them with knitting too. If you’re stuck in a rut, all it takes is one little glimmer of inspiration to get you out of it. To spark your creativity, go to your local yarn shop and check out all the beautiful colors and feel the soft textures of the yarn. Or if you only have time for the short-cut version, just check out the photo below and imagine you’re there!

Another way to get out of a rut is to give yourself a fresh start. Begin a new pattern, one that is unique and different and looks like fun. Try a new technique like lace or cables or color work. Learning something new can bring you a quick feeling of accomplishment and excitement.

Take a cue from the photo below, and cuddle up on the couch and create something that will wow you! Picture how enjoyable it will be to cozy up with a new knitting project on a quiet evening.

Talk to a friend who also loves to knit. Enthusiasm has a way of being contagious. Pick up a new magazine (like ours!) and flip through the pages and imagine your favorite patterns taking shape on your needles.

The key is just to get started. Light the spark, and see where it takes you!
